Contrary to popular belief, the Queen's Guard is not just outside Buckingham Palace for show.

But what a show the royal regiment put on last week!

During the morning changing of the guard one day, the soldiers positively thrilled the crowd with a rendition of the Game of Thrones theme. While there's always some sort fanfare set to music, the homage to the fantastical Emmy-nominated HBO drama came as a delightful surprise.

It was already well known, of course, that Queen Elizabeth II is a major fan, the monarch having visited the series' Belfast set last month. The only question is, does she watch promptly on Sunday nights, or does she take advantage of the DVR and enjoy a little dragon action with her afternoon cuppa?

Either way, awesome all around.

The changing of the St. James' Palace detachment of the Queen's Guard at her main residence in London occurs daily at around 11 a.m. local time. Led by the Corps of Drums, the Old Guard plays music while the New Guard lines up for inspection.

Happily, the playing of the Game of Thrones theme was not an indicator of a massive bloodletting or the revenge killing of any principal characters.

GoT picked up six Emmy Award nominations this month, including Outstanding Drama Series, past winner Peter Dinklage's fourth nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Lena Headey's first nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

But emerge victorious or not come Aug. 16, at least GoT has the royal seal of approval.
