D Dipasupil/FilmMagicElaine Stritch has died at the age of 89. The Emmy and Tony winner passed away Thursday at her home in Birmingham, Mich.
"Elaine was truly one-of-a-kind," Stritch's agent Joel Dean tells E! News. "She was feisty, irascible and at the same time very vulnerable. After first meeting her she was very protective and hard to get to know but once I did she would be a friend forever. I learned not to be intimidated when she yelled at me which was very often."
Born in Detroit in 1925, Stritch got her start in show business on Broadway in the 1940s. She starred in over 40 Broadway productions, including Sail Away, Show Boat, Follies, The Full Monty and A Little Night Music. Her one-woman show Elaine Stritch at Liberty won the Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event.
In recent years, Stritch was known for starring on 30 Rock as Colleen Donaghy, the hilariously bossy and overbearing mother of Alec Baldwin's character Jack Donaghy.
In addition to her Tony win, Stritch has won three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Guest Actress for Law & Order, Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety Program for Elaine Stritch at Liberty and Outstanding Guest Actress for 30 Rock.
Stritch's legacy as a showbiz icon has already been remembered by numerous celebs who've taken to Twitter to share their condolences. Christina Applegate, shared, "Ahhh the Ladies who Lunch! Elaine Stritch shall be missed." Anna Kendrick posted, "Elaine Stritch man. Hell of a performer, spirit and woman. This one really hurts. Today's work is for you ma'am. Crazy love."
"What a life! 89 full years. A true legend & one of my all time favorites. R.I.P. #ElaineStritch," Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted. And Kate Flannery wrote, "The great @ElaineStritch is dead at 89. There will NEVER be another. A fearless, true original. #30Rock #AtLiberty
