Sonja Flemming/CBSMove over, Mila Kunis! Wedding bells will ring on Two and a Half Men…between Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer. CBS boss Nina Tassler revealed details on how Two and a Half Men kicks off its final season and it involves babies, an existential crisis and marriage.
"Here's the breakdown, Walden [Kutcher] is going to have a major health scare and it is going to give him a little bit of an existential crisis," Tassler told reporters. "And he wants to find a way to add more meaning to his life, so he decides he wants to adopt a child. In doing so, he starts the process and realizes it's very difficult to adopt a child as a single, straight man. So once and for all he decides: 'I'm going to propose to Alan [Cryer] and we're going to get married and adopt a child as a gay couple.' That's just going to start the season on Two and a Half Men and I think we're off for a great run."
When asked about any blowback from the LGBTQ community, Tassler said she wasn't worried.
"I think it's a very positive statement," she told reporters. "It's like you know what, 'I'm going to adopt a child as a gay couple,' and it's like the reality is he can do that, and in a universe when at one point you couldn't do that and now you can do that. I think that's a much more positive statement."
GLAAD responded to the news.
"We hope the show will acknowledge not only the progress made in acceptance of gay and lesbian couples, but also the fact that—in many areas of the country—same-sex couples are often under greater scrutiny or still barred from adoption options that straight couples have," Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, said in a statement.
And what about Charlie Sheen? Could the former star of Two and a Half Men return for the show's swan song? "We're not having those conversations right now," Tassler said.
As for other surprises, Tassler said, "Chuck [Lorre] has a lot of stuff up his sleeve."
