Get ready to learn the Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. Bravo's first scripted series will make its splashy debut on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 10 p.m.
The dramedy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer veteran Marti Noxon stars Lisa Edelstein, Paul Adelstein, Janeane Garofalo, Beau Garrett and Necar Zadegan, and is inspired by Vicki Iovine's Girlfriends Guide books.
While speaking about the inspiration behind the series, Noxon revealed to the room that today, July 14, she made her last alimony payment. Additionally, Noxon, who has also worked on Mad Men, said she wanted to write about sexual politics, the "balance of power is new for people when a woman earns a lot more than a man...when she gets more attention for being in the world."
The show, which has 13 episodes in its first season, stars Edelstein as Abby, a self-help author who shocks the world when her seemingly happy family life is pretty much anything but. Adelstein plays her husband Jake, but Noxon said they didn't intend for the relationship between the two to be so central. Thank the chemistry between the two actors for that. Edelstein said it immediately felt like Adelstein was family when they met. "All our scenes felt very rich that way," she said.
"It was really electric," Noxon said.
The show will feature appearances by Emmy nominee and Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox and Carrie Fisher will recur as Abby's longtime editor. "She's amazing, I love Carrie Fisher," Edelstein said. "I think she's so brilliant." The pilot of Girlfriends' Guide shot before Fisher returned to Star Wars, so Noxon said they may write her character as having gone to rehab for when she returns at a lower weight.
As for other guest stars? Well, the panel was mum. Noxon said they weren't allowed to reveal names, but there was "some really exciting casting coming."
