The Strain, Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro

Michael Gibson/FX

FX's newest horror show is here, and it's everything we wanted it to be: visually stunning, a little silly, and utterly terrifying.

The Strain, based on the book of the same name by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, tells the tale of "a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism." In other words, this ain't no Vampire Diaries

Like all the best TV shows (looking at you, Lost and Fringe), The Strain starts with a plane gone wrong. In this case, a scary monster comes out of the cargo hold and attacks, leaving almost everyone dead, the window shades down, and all electricity off. You know, it goes how most monster attacks tend to go.

Over the course of the premiere, we met quite a few rather interesting characters: a pair of CDC biochemists (Corey Stoll and Mia Maestro), an old vampire hunter with a sword (David Bradley), a CDC worker with an ailing wife (Sean Astin), and, of course, a vampire boss named The Master.

We also got some cool vampire lines like "Even I miss...breathing...sometimes," and discovered that, unlike in most other vampire-related shows, blood-sucking is about the farthest thing from a sensual experience as you can get.

All in all, it's fun and super scary, which is perfect for a summer horror show. Plus, it's co-created by Lost's Carlton Cuse, so you know things are bound to get real interesting.

So what did you think? Will you continue watching or are will you stick with your True Blood? Head to the comments and let us know!
