Yikes, stripes!

When we heard Lupita Nyong'o was going to be presenting the award for Womenswear Designer of the Year at the 2014 CFDA awards this evening, our first thought was: What will she wear?

And we have to admit—this striped getup she ended up stepping out in was not first on our prediction list.

The Oscar winner's striped culottes and top combo is giving us flashes of the Met Ball. Although we've long buried the memory, it was less than a month ago that Lupita stepped out on the red carpet in a green flapper-inspired ensemble during the Costume Institute Gala.

Once again Lupita has chosen to buck the trends and go with something bold, patterned and totally different from the sophisticated gowns she had on heavy rotation during the beginning of award season this year.

She completed the look with an updo and blue shadow—a similar look she sported during the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic this weekend. But for the CFDA awards she paired her makeup with something much bolder than the printed sundress she wore to the polo match.

We know Lupita is a total knockout in a more traditional, floor-grazing gown. But clearly the actress wants to step out of the box and go with the unorthodox red carpet looks these days.

While we applaud her risk-taking, we have to admit, we're missing those Oscar and SAG Award days.

What do you think of Lupita's CFDA Awards look?
