The couple has revealed that their surrogate Delphine has suffered a miscarriage.
"Bill and I want to grow our family more than anything else, so as you can imagine we were shocked and saddened when we received the bad news," Giuliana tells E! News in an exclusive statement. "We are incredibly appreciative of all the love and support from our viewers who have been on our journey for the past seven seasons and hope to have good news to share with everyone soon. We have had our share of ups and downs and our faith is strong therefore we know in the end, everything will be OK."
"This whole season on Giuliana & Bill we've been trying to have another baby," Bill Rancic said in a statement to People. "Unfortunately our surrogate Delphine who we love very much had a miscarriage. It's something that we didn't see coming. We were devastated."
"She was about nine weeks pregnant. We were pretty close to getting into the safe zone," he added (G will also be talking about the couple's rocky road to baby no. 2 tonight on E! News).
Giuliana and Bill are no strangers to heartache when it comes to starting a family. The duo welcomed their first child, son Edward "Duke" Rancic, on Aug. 29, 2012, via a gestational carrier after three unsuccessful in-vitro fertility treatments.
During that time, Giuliana was also diagnosed with breast cancer but thanks to her early diagnosis, the mother of one is now a survivor, who has become a prominent spokeswoman about the importance of early detection.
"We experienced a miscarriage years ago when we were trying with Giuliana, so we had been keeping the pregnancy news tight to the vest," Bill revealed. "Delphine is amazing. We hit the surrogate lottery when we met her. Obviously this was no fault of hers."
Despite the setback, the couple is staying strong and leaning on each other for support.
"It's a double sadness because we didn't want her to feel bad," Bill said. "And Giuliana was rather distraught at first, but she's tough. In times like this we rely on our faith. Once the tears went away we started to look towards the future."
Because of their struggles, the duo is eternally grateful for their son, who turns the big 0-2 in August and provides the couple with a daily dose of happiness.
"Duke just turned 21 months and he's a ball of energy. From the minute he wakes up he is just running."
And yes, their little tyke is still a "huge flirt," according to Bill. "He just walks up to ladies at the Coffee Bean and starts batting his eyelashes and smiling at them. It's the cutest thing I've ever seen."
The pair also revealed that they're not giving up when it comes to giving Duke a sibling.
"We're fighters," Bill insisted. "Hopefully we're going to have good news and Delphine will be on board one more time. We've had to battle it out and that's something that we're going to continue to do."
