My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the wildly popular 2002 comedy flick, is getting a sequel, writer Nia Vardalos confirmed.
The 51-year-old actress revealed the news via her Twitter page, letting fans know that a follow-up flick is currently in the works with actor John Corbett set to reprise his role.
"I'm working on the MBFGWedding sequel; now that I'm experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter," she wrote. "A few jaded press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true."
The thesp added that "the entire big fat family is invited back for the sequel."
According to Variety, the story centers on "the lovably loud Portokalos family who return after a family secret is revealed and a bigger, fatter wedding brings the big fat Greek family back together again."
Like Corbett, Vardalos is set to reprise her role, while Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will return as producers. Additionally, Vardalos will serve as an executive producer, along with Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, Norm Waitt and Steve Shareshian, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
No director is currently attached to the project.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding originally made its way to the silver screen thanks to Rita Wilson who brought the one-woman play, based on Vardalos' early life, to her husband Tom Hanks' attention.
Made for just $5 million, the flick brought in a whopping $241 million at the domestic box office, nabbed Vardalos an Oscar nomination and became the highest grossing romantic comedy in history.
A TV-spin off series, titled My Big Fat Greek Life, was also created following the film's success, although it only lasted for one season.
