musingsofavirginwhore.com/Tuition these days costs and arm and a leg—and now, apparently a virginity too. That's how medical student "Elizabeth Raine" has decided to pay her way through an MD-PhD program at a "leading university"—by auctioning off her virginity.
The 28-year-old, who says she has bachelor degrees in biology and engineering, has been planning the auction for a year and writes that her "virginity fits me like a glove. It is unexpected and unconventional, yet exhilarating and empowering, Now, having made the decision to sell my virginity, I cannot imagine losing it in any other way."
She also told The Huffington Post, "I have a busy life. I am picky and guys were never a priority."
The auction is laid out as such: "Liz" will submit to the highest bidder a medical exam or polygraph test proving she is a virgin, while the highest bidder will need proof that he doesn't have any STDs. The actual sex of it all with take place in Australia, to avoid prostitution laws. The bidder will have to wear a condom and cannot be drunk or high. Oh, and there's no anal.
The stipulations go as far as to set a specific time frame for the dirty deed: "5.2. The Meeting shall include the Virgin remaining with the Successful Bidder from 8 PM on that date until 8 AM the following morning, or such other period as may be agreed between the Virgin and the Successful Bidder," the contract reads.
"Liz" originally said she would donate 35 percent of the proceeds to "education for women in developing countries," though now she says the auction isn't even about the money. On her blog, "Musings of a Virgin Whore," she writes:
"Instead, very broadly, it is about how society continues to exercise control over female sexuality by chaining it tightly to female morality. It is about the fact that we have not left patriarchy in the past (we all know male morality is not judged by the same standard), and that a woman still cannot chose to do with her body what she pleases without eliciting condemnation and hate from those (or some of those) around her...This auction is no longer practical for me, it has come to mean so much more than that."
As the bidding came to a close, "Liz" gushed on her blog that the auction had changed her life. She was thinking about dedicating her career to "the health and rights of sex workers." She was no longer a judgmental person. She had no regrets: Her family knew what she was doing, and lawyers told her she wouldn't get kicked out of school.
Bids arrived from Serbia and Japan and Australia and the U.K., with the winning bidder paying just over $800,000. And then she changed her mind (excerpted by Gawker):
"The bidding closed yesterday as planned (high bid was $801,000), but I am here to tell you that the terms of the auction will not be fulfilled. With the blessings of my management and the high bidders, I have decided to put a stop to this kerfuffle (to describe it nicely) and return my focus to my medical training. I still do possess some spitefully strong beliefs about virginity, prostitution, and a woman's right to do as she damned pleases, but school is my first priority (as it has been for my entire life). At this point, I no longer care about the auction, at all. This was a very easy decision."
The post, entitled "The Ending" has now been deleted. Was it all a scam? A publicity stunt? Did she get cold feet? Was she ever actually planning on going through with it? There's only one thing we know: She's probably still a virgin.
