Watch: Michelle Obama Honors Anna Wintour

OK, we are officially on the edge of our seats excited about the Met gala tonight!

While Michelle Obama won't be attending the ball tonight, she did the next best thing: cut the ribbon at the opening of Anna Wintour's Costume Center this afternoon in New York City.

Clad in an emerald green Naeem Khan dress with intricate floral detailing, FLOTUS grabbed a giant pair of gold scissors and cut the ribbon, along with Anna and the president of the Met, Emily K. Rafferty

The crowd was jam-packed with the industry's biggest names, including Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Donatella Versace, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, as well as more A-listers, like Sarah Jessica Parker, Victoria Beckham, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The first lady took to the podium and said, "I know that Anna hates being the center of attention, so this all is probably killing her—but we love it." She went on to praise the Vogue editrix, saying, "But the truth is, I'm here today because of Anna. I'm here because I have such respect and admiration for this woman who I am proud to call my friend."

Now, we're not exactly used to seeing Anna look so warm and fuzzy, but clearly she's got a soft spot for FLOTUS. She's typically straight-faced, but Michelle Obama's warm speech struck a chord with her, and the two powerful women cozied up in a warm embrace.

We can't wait to see all the jaw-dropping fashion at tonight's massive event, and luckily for al of us, it's just mere hours away!
