After news broke that a Mrs. Doubtfire sequel is in the works at Fox 2000, the ex-actress told her Twitter followers and Facebook fans that she wouldn't be up for reprising her role as Nattie Hillard. And in the former child star's defense, it has been 21 years since the family comedy was in theaters.
"For the record, no, I do not have anything to do with the Mrs. Doubtfire sequel, nor will I. Sequels generally suck unless they were planned as part of a trilogy or series," the Matilda star, 26, tweeted Thursday. "I think Doubtfire ended where it needed to end. I'm glad I had the chance to be in it, and I'm proud of what we did, but I don't see how we could do it again. There are many, many reasons I don't want to be in Mrs. Doubtfire 2. But they haven't even asked me (yet), so no need to worry."
Wilson also shared her opinion via Facebook Thursday. "I loved having the chance to be a part of Mrs. Doubtfire twenty years ago, they haven't asked me to be a part of the sequel, I don't think I'd suit the part even if they did, I don't act in films anymore anyway, and I liked where the last one ended so don't really think a sequel is necessary," she wrote. "I only say these things at all because fans were asking."
The New York University graduate became a trending topic on the social media site, which gave her with the chance to plug her writing career and promote the nonprofit she works with, Publicolor.org.
"P.S. Whoever chooses these trending topics needs to get their stuff together," Wilson wrote.
On Friday, Wilson once again addressed the Mrs. Doubtfire sequel news—and her sudden notoriety—via Twitter. "Oy. I responded on my Facebook and Twitter. People act like I got a publicist and a bullhorn and took to the streets," she tweeted. "I thought we'd be done this morning. Nope. Only @solangeknowles can get me through this. At least all my exes got to see my name trending yesterday. But I don't have that many, and am on good terms with most of them, so..."
What about Matthew Lawrence, who played middle child Chris Hillard? "Of course I would be on board," he said Thursday. "I hope they make the second as good as the first. The first was so good."
Lisa Jakub, who played eldest child Lydia Hillard in the 1993 comedy, also weighed in on the sequel news via Twitter Thursday. "About #MrsDoubtfire2: It's news to me! No one has asked and don't know how I would feel about it," she wrote. "Hard to comment without any information!" The next day, Jakub hinted she might return for a second installment. "Mara said no," she tweeted. "I'm undecided."
