We didn't know we'd been waiting our whole lives for a picture of a baby squirrel in a red cast. But now that we've seen her, it seems like everything that's ever happened has led to this point.

It should almost be illegal for something this adorable to exist. Thankfully, there are no crimes against cuteness. You really don't need to know the backstory to enjoy it, but it definitely adds to the sweetness:

This baby squirrel was brought into City Wildlife after she fell 75 feet from her nest on to the concrete sidewalk below. She suffered a bloody nose, a broken tooth, and a broken ankle. Luckily, just like children, this squirrel is young enough that her ankle should heal very quickly.

The six-week-old squirrel needs to keep the cast on for about four (adorable) weeks, at which point the Washington, D.C.-based wilfelife rehabilitation center hopes to return her to the wild.

"We're going to do some exercising with her and see how she gets around," City Wildlife clinic director Alicia Demay says. "And make sure that she's using that leg correctly."

In the meantime, we found our new favorite animal: Baby squirrels in casts.
