When Rosamund Pike landed the highly coveted role of Amy Dunne in Gone Girl, she was best known for her strong supporting roles. But all of that is about the change when she takes center stage in the upcoming mystery thriller.

The 35-year-old British actress, who stars opposite Ben Affleck in the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling novel, graces the cover of W Magazine's May issue and opens up the moment she found out she was chosen for the career-changing character.

"The only evidence I have that I got the call to play Amy is a selfie of me jumping in the rain in the Highlands," the blond beauty revealed to W's editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg. Unfortunately for Pike, she accidentally deleted the confirmation text from Gone Girl director David Fincher.

"I look both happy and thoroughly daunted—the whole ‘You got the best gig in years' scenario gives me the creeps," she continued.

Pike's memorable parts include appearing alongside Keira Knightley in Pride and Prejudice, with Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher and as the Bond girl in Die Another Day.

"I liked that people didn't immediately know who Rosamund was," Fincher explains. "I'd always liked Rosamund in movies, but I didn't really know her. That made her very interesting."

Pike understands the significance of portraying the mysterious and unique character, not only with the enthusiasts of the "can't put it down" book, but also reportedly beating out A-listers including Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman.

"I do remember saying to David, ‘I know you know I have this character in me; you zeroed in on me for good reason,'" Pike tells the magazine. "With David Fincher, it's like being X-rayed—he sees things that you may not want anyone to see. Now I have to prove him right—I have to show the world that I'm as dark as he thinks I am."

Gone Girl centers around the relationship between Nick (Affleck) and Amy Dunne, who have hit a rough patch after moving to Nick's small hometown in Missouri from New York after he loses his job.

Amy finds the change from the big city quite difficult, and things take a scary turn when she vanishes on the couple's fifth wedding anniversary. To make things even worse, Nick becomes the prime suspect after what seems to be plenty of surprising evidence against him arises.

Neil Patrick Harris, Missi Pyle, Tyler Perry, Patrig Fugit, Casey Wilson, Scott McNairy, Kim Dickens and Emily Ratajkowski also star. Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea, along with Leslie Dixon, are producing the film.

Gone Girl hits theaters Oct. 3.
