Whether you thought the How I Met Your Mother series finale was legendary or meh, it's over. And nobody knows that more than the people who brought you the show to begin with. Following the finale, co-creator Craig Thomas took to Twitter to thank viewers, even those who hated the ending.

"Thank you all. I mean it: Every possible reaction to the last 44 minutes...thank you all..." Thomas tweeted. "The fact that we have been a TV sitcom that has received this much passion from fans, for 9 years (not just tonight)—thank you. We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till [sic] the very end. Thanks for taking that ride with us."

"We did a finale about life's twists and turns and that is not always what happens...but THANKS! Seriously - no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU...you were with us," he said. "We love you. Thanks for this ride."

To say the finale was divisive is an understatement. Warning, spoilers! Ted (Josh Radnor) finally finished his story about meeting Tracy (Cristin Milioti), the mother of his children, but the show didn't end there. After the death of Tracy and with the blessing of his children, Ted went after Robin (Cobie Smulders), who had divorced Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), and the two ended up together.

"Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas], are so smart. They had actually planned the ending during our pilot," Smulders said on The Late Show with David Letterman. "They shot some scenes with the two children—we shot it with them when they were teenagers and now they're in their mid-20s—we shot this whole scene with them. It's kind of amazing that it's been nine years and it's come full-circle and they've been allowed to see their vision through."

But not everybody thought it was "amazing."

"WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE WHOLE SHOW. IM YELLING RIGHT NOW. #HIMYM," @caitlin_sweeny tweeted after the finale. She wasn't the only person with #HIMYMFinale rage.

"So if my wife dies young, I should tell my kids a long story about how we met, while really asking if I can bang an old lover. #HIMYMFinale," @JoePace45 tweeted.

"Turns out that the writers saved the most painful slap...to the fans #HIMYMFinale," @rooftopz said.

But others countered with more pointed thoughts.

"Cynicism about #HIMYMFinale is sad. She wasn't 'killed off,' or 'just another placeholder' for Robin. Ted found true love. Tragedy happens," @victorbalta shared.

"Last thought on HIMYM: Life isn't Disney. Life is messy. #HIMYMFinale reflects that," @CassieFambro said.
