Kurt Cobain's Death Case Revisited: Dozens of New Photos Released by Seattle Police Department

Singer's death has been investigated by authorities

It's almost a week before the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, and the Seattle Police Department has just released 35 never-before-seen photos from the investigation.

The pictures were taken at the scene and remained undeveloped until last week, when they announced that they had processed the rolls of film as part of a routine re-examination of the case.

The photos display exactly how Cobain left what police call his suicide note, on top of a planter in the greenhouse with a red pen stuck through the center of the paper.

And while a copy of the note has previously been released, no photos of its placement in the greenhouse have been unveiled until now.

The other photos show Cobain's wallet and his Washington State driver's license.

A series of pictures also shows drug paraphernalia, cigarettes, a cigarette lighter, sunglasses and a winter hat.

There are also several snapshots of officers, investigators and detectives who are shown securing and inspecting the scene.

An especially eerie photo shows one policeman trying to cover the glass doors of the Lake Washington home in order to keep prying eyes from being able to see inside.

So why did the police decide to release the photos?

Veteran homicide detective Mike Ciesynski explained that authorities wanted to put an end to the persistent speculation behind the Nirvana singer's death.

"I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at that [undeveloped film] because there were some conspiracy theories that...we [the Seattle Police Department] were hiding the film," he told CBS News.
