Lady Gaga Calls SXSW Vomit Stunt "Art in Its Purest Form," Says Controversy "Doesn't Matter"

Singer stops by Today to defend her concert with Millie Brown and talk about the "controversy" it caused

Eight days after Lady Gaga let a performance artist puke green slime on her during a concert at the SXSW Festival in Texas, the "G.U.Y." singer visited NBC's Today in New York to address the controversy.

Sitting down with anchor Savannah Guthrie, the 27-year-old defended her shocking stage antics. "I guess we weren't completely surprised. [Millie Brown] and I know that not everybody's going to love that performance," the five-time Grammy winner admitted. "But we both really believe in artistic expression and strong identities. I support her and what she does. ARTPOP, my new album, is about bringing art and music together and the sprit of creative rebellion. For us, that performance was art in its purest form. But we totally understand that some people won't be into it."

"Did we want the controversy? I suppose it doesn't matter," the pop diva said of her headline-making performance with Brown. "Either way, we don't make things for any intention in particular other than in the spirit of entertaining the crowd and creating something that is really for the moment. It wasn't meant for the Today show. It was meant for a club performance in Austin, and we had a great time."

Does Gaga have any regrets about anything in her career?

"I feel like everything happens for a reason. I think you learn every time there's a challenge in your life. I wouldn't want my fans to have any regrets in their own lives, so I would say no," she told Guthrie. "But there's of course, I'm a musician and an artist, so I'm always editing and changing things, but that's the beauty of life, right? Your life is your own art piece. You can make it whatever you want."

Gaga will embark on ArtRave: The Artpop Ball in May, but other than that, she's not sure what's next. I will let the whims of life take me where they may," the "Applause" singer said of her career plans. "I really love my fans and want to continue making music for them. I'm already writing new music."
