Miley Cyrus Said "No Thanks" to Katy Perry Kiss 5 Years Ago: Look Back at Their Frenemy Timeline

Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry's kiss last weekend led to a lot of tongue wagging, but these ladies have been lashing out at each other—with love, mostly—for years and years now!

But long before Miley was locking lips with with Ms. "I Kissed a Girl" onstage (or calling out her ex John Mayer and his playboy reputation), she was so not down to kiss Katy.

Let's go back to 2008, aka the glory days of Hannah Montana. Katy, just 23 at the time, reportedly wanted to recreate the famed Britney Spears-Madonna smooch that happened at the 2003 MTV VMAs. When E! News asked Miley, just 15, if she'd be open to doing this at the Teen Choice Awards, she answered laughingly, "No, thanks!"

She even threw some shade the California Gurl's way, saying, "She sang on my record. So I think she's kind of getting back at me, because she was doing harmonies and backgrounds."

Dayum, girl! (To be fair, jury's still out on whether anyone can be held accountable for what they said at 15—let alone being under the duress of being a Disney star.)

Katy took a subtle dig at Miley back in 2008, too, though. "I'm not here to be a role model personality. I'm here to be in the business of f--king rock and roll," she told YRB magazine. "I look up to people like Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Freddie Mercury and Cyndi Lauper. I want to have that same type of appeal. If people want a role model, they can have Miley Cyrus."

Well, no one can say Miley hasn't rebranded herself and shed that sweet Southern girl image since then, so Katy's quote is no longer applicable.

Let's move on. In 2010, one tabloid claimed to have overheard Katy comparing Miley to Britney in a not-so-nice way. (It's important to note this past December, both Miley and Katy were front row, fangirling their hearts out at the kickoff of Brit's Las Vegas residency. They've also each expressed their adoration and respect for the princess of pop.)

Katy, who didn't diss Miley this time around, wanted to set the record straight. "Rumor control: I never said s--t bout my girl Miley," she tweeted at the time, "I love that ho." And Miley, reportedly took the Brit comparison as "a compliment," praising her future collaborator for the chart-topping successes she'd achieved.

Ms. Perry also threw some shade—not specifically at Miley, but at all the naked female pop stars of the moment—in a 2013 interview with NPR. "I do see myself becoming this, whatever, inspiration out of default right now, 'cause it's such a strange world," she said. "Like females in pop--everybody's getting naked. I mean, I've been naked before but I don't feel like I have to always get naked to be noticed. But it's interesting to see."

Interesting, indeed. But it's pretty clear, for the most part, Miley and Katy's frenemy history really paints them more as friends than foes. And it's no secret that both ladies know how to get attention, so really this latest social media scuffle is a win-win for them.

The only possible loser in this whole sitch? Maybe a certain man still waiting on the world to change.
