Ellen DeGeneres hosted the affair and brought her signature sense of humor to the Dolby Theatre—poking fun at the top nominees of the evening.
And while the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Independent Spirit Awards tend to hint at who takes home the prized Oscar, there's no denying that tensions are high among the dressed-to-the-nines guests.
Gravity took home the most awards of the evening with an impressive seven trophies, with Dallas Buyers Club following shortly behind with three awards.
The Alfonso Cuarón directed film won for Best Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Film Editing, Cinematography, Original Score and Best Director. Wow!
Jared Leto took home the first award of the night for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club.
He thanked his mother for "teaching me to dream" during his heartfelt acceptance speech.
Leto added, " "This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, tonight I stand here in front of the world for you."
Pharrell Williams then brought the house down (and got Amy Adams, Meryl Streep and Lupita Nyong'o to boogie!) during his live performance of the Oscar-nominated "Happy."
Catherine Martin took home top honors for her wardrobe on The Great Gatsby—looks like all the Prada caught the academy's attention after all!
Frozen won Best Animated Film early on in the live telecast, beating out The Wind Rises, The Croods, Despicable Me 2 and Ernest & Celestine.
Angelina Jolie, who was dressed in a stunning Elie Saab metallic gown, was given a sweet kiss on her head by Brad Pitt when her Governors Award was highlighted on the big screen tonight. Awww! She appeared to be teary-eyed and smiled as the crowd clapped in her honor.
Leto then gave U2 a standing ovation after their performed their song for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Best Documentary Short Subject went to The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life by Malcolm Clark and Nicholas Reed; while The Great Beauty won for Best Foreign Film. The wonderful flick about a man reflecting on his youth came from Italy.
And the trophies for Best Animated Short Film and Best Live Action Short Film went to Mr. Hublot (by Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares) and Helium (by Anders Walter and Kim Magnusson), respectively.
Dallas Buyers Club won big again after Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews took home their Oscars for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Then there was the massive celebrity selfie, featuring Ellen DeGeneres, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper, Streep, Channing Tatum, Leto, Jolie, and Nyong'o! It's kind of the best thing that happened all night.
Speaking of Nyong'o, she won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her amazing performance in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave.
She thanked her co-stars for their "fearlessness" and her family and friends as she choked back tears during her speech.
But back to DeGeneres' hilarious antics for one second, she had pizza delivered to the audience and offered slices to anyone in the front rows!
Watching Pitt hand out paper napkins and plates to Sandra Bullock was priceless!
Whoopi Goldberg then presented the tribute for Wizard of Oz, as the academy was celebrating the beloved film's 75th anniversary. Judy Garland's children, Liza Minnelli, Lorna and Joseph Luft, were then asked to "stand up and take a bow." Pink sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in a stunning red sequined dress (just like Dorothy's ruby slippers!) against a backdrop of scenes from the film.
Best Original Song went to Frozen's "Let It Go" with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Idina Menzel had song the up-tempo ballad just moments before it took home the statue!
John Ridley won for Adapted Screenplay for his work on 12 Years a Slave. He was given the award by Penélope Cruz and Robert De Niro.
Best Original Screenplay went to Spike Jonze for Her.
Cuarón took home the top honors as Best Director for his work on Gravity. He profusely thanked Bullock and called her "one of the best people I've ever met."
And the award for Best Actress? Why, it went to Cate Blanchett for her rousing performance in Blue Orchid, of course!
J.Law presented the award for Best Actor—and didn't trip on her way out onto the stage—to Dallas Buyers Club star McConaughey.
But the final, and undoubtedly most important, award for Best Picture went to 12 Years a Slave.
