Trendsetters at Work: The Cut

Trendsetters, New York Magazine, Stella Bugbee Jennifer Cooper, E!

Confession: One of the first site's we check every morning is New York Magazine's The Cut. Mainly because we often get a chuckle from their clever write-ups of the goings-on in the fashion and beauty realm. One of the gals causing us to giggle on a daily basis? The blog's editorial director Stella Bugbee. She let us into her New York office where she revealed her love for Diana Vreeland and dished on her online shopping craze. See what she shared below.

-----------------------------------------------------

What was your very first job? I walked dogs in junior high school. But my first "real" job was for Roger Black, the nineties' creative guru in magazines. He designed the original Rolling Stone and was hugely influential in the way magazines looked at that time.

How did you get started in your career? One foot in front of the other! Internships that lead to full time work. In college, I interned for everybody that would have me. Those people became my mentors and eventually my colleagues in media.

Who are some of your career heroes? I've always loved sixties-era Diana Vreeland as a model of a woman whose best work was done later in life. She seemed to love her job and always pursue creativity and curiosity.

What's a typical workday like for you? It starts early...at 6:30. I start reading Twitter and the New York Times. By 8:30 I've gotten my three kids off to school and am emailing with The Cut team about the first posts of the day. Then I get ready for work and come to the office. It's busy all day. Each day is like a little marathon.

What do you typically wear to work? Simple clothing—jeans and sweaters and heels. A Stella McCartney blazer or an Isabel Marant coat. I like a heel at work. During the day I try on all kinds of makeup so sometimes I start the day looking one way and end it quite another.

What are your favorite stores to shop for work clothes? I don't buy much. I am into having few things, but having things I really love. I buy everything online because the internet is FANTASTIC like that. Net-a-Porter, Barneys, J.Crew, and direct from brands.

List five things that are on your desk right now: My panda mug, a Tom Ford lipstick, loads of mail, the latest issue of Grazia, and probably crumbs of all sorts.

Describe your office décor. What was your inspiration? Did you decorate it yourself? My ideal office décor is totally simple, white, with almost nothing in it but images, books and small items that make me smile. A little messy, but joyfully so.

What's the best piece of career advice you've ever received? "Have a plan." Meaning the only way to get where you want to be is to know where that is.

Finish the sentence:

Today for lunch I had… a homemade quinoa salad and chocolate from the beauty editor's stash.

The first website I log onto every day is… Twitter! Then Chartbeat which shows our traffic on The Cut.

The beauty product you can always find in my purse is… Troy Surratt eyebrow pencil and mascara.

My must-have work gadget is… iPhone and a Mophie charger or two.

My usual Starbucks order is… Nothing! One cup of tea in the morning at home and that's it for my caffeine.

If I need a quick break during work, I usually… I don't really take "breaks" per se, but for a change of pace I like to go to the beauty closet and try new perfumes, or set up a fun shot to post to The Cut Instagram.

If I wasn't doing this job, I would be… I've been threatening to go to cooking school for years.

The best part of my job is… The smart, funny women I get to work with every day.
