Matt Lauer Will Fill In (Again) for Bob Costas on Primetime Winter Olympics Coverage

Even with those hipster glasses and a night off from anchoring NBC's primetime Olympics coverage, Bob Costas cannot seem to beat his eye infection in Sochi. So, that means Matt Lauer will fill in—again—for Costas on Wednesday evening.

The veteran NBC sportscaster phoned in to the Today show to give an update about his current condition and to tell Lauer he needed to "come out of the bullpen again tonight."

"Actually, I don't feel that bad," Costas admitted. "I've done lots of ball games and events feeling much less than my best, but in this case it's just involuntary," he continued. "It's an eye infection, and my eyes are so blurry and watery and become so light-sensitive that even in dim light they're constantly tearing up."

Lauer recapped the experience to Costas and also revealed that he needed to arrive for his extra duties a little bit early on Tuesday.

"You go in, you just kind of bang it out. I had to go in early, not to practice my lines, but to Lysol your whole dressing room," Lauer quipped about the potentially germy surfaces.

According to NBC, Tuesday night was the first time since 1998 that their Olympics coverage had been anchored by anyone other than Costas.

"In return for this, I promise to step in on the next ten Steals and Deals and Ambush Makeovers,'' Costas joked as a way to make it up for Lauer for filling in for him.

You rest your eyes, Bob, and see you later this evening, Matt!
