50 Cent Escapes Jail
Looks like 50 Cent has dodged another bullet.
The rap superstar managed to avoid jail time Friday after cutting a plea deal with prosecutors in Springfield, Massachusetts, in an assault case stemming from a brawl at a concert last year.
By pleading no contest, Fiddy's record will be wiped clean if he manages to remain crime- and drug-free for two years. In addition, the Eminem protégé, who resides in Connecticut, must take anger-management classes and is now forbidden from carrying a gun in Massachusetts
The "Candy Shop" rapper, who attended court proceedings Friday but said nothing, was rung up on three assault charges--trampling two women and punching a third--after making a surprise appearance at the invitation-only Spring Jam event at the Hippodrome club in Springfield.
Performing before a 1,400-person crowd, 50 Cent was about 10 minutes into his set when he was beaned in the head with a water bottle. That didn't go over well with Fiddy and his crew, who dove into the audience looking for some payback and incited a melee that allegedly left the trio of women injured.
The 29-year-old's legal team claimed that Fiddy, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, was the victim, and that he did not mean to hurt anyone in the scuffle.
Steven Leary, one of the entertainer's lawyers, said his client was a "law-abiding citizen" who stopped using and selling drugs long ago as his music career took off.
"I don't see this as a case that deserves any jail time," Leary said.
Judge Robert Kumor evidently agreed, despite testimony from one alleged victim, 25-year-old Donna Dejesus, who said Fiddy punched her in the face.
"He attacked women," Dejesus said Friday. "We were just there to see a concert. What did I do to get punched in the face? Nothing."
Judge Kumor, who admitted to not being down with Fiddy's rhymes, gave the rapper a brow beating. "You're a cross-cultural entertainer," the judge said. "You have an obligation to people in society."
Fiddy's latest obligation to society came in the form of Massacre, his latest monster-selling album.
Since debuting at number one in March, the disc has been certified four-times platinum. The track "Candy Shop" hit the top slot on both the rap and pop charts, where it was number one for nine weeks. It's still in the top 20.
Next up for the laconic hip-hopster is his feature film debut in Get Rich or Die Tryin', a semi-autobiographical tale about a drug dealer who forgoes a life of crime in the 'hood to pursue a musical career.
The film, to be directed by Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father) and written by Terence Winter (The Sopranos), is expected to hit theaters later this year or early 2006 and is currently filming, per IMDB.com
