Michelle Obama wore a custom-made Carolina Herrera gown to a state dinner held Tuesday at the White House in honor of French President Francois Hollande.
The dress itself was an event, boasting a full "liberty blue" skirt with a billowing train, a black velvet belt and a blue corset under a scoop-neck black sheer top with hand-embroidered and beaded appliqués and three-quarter sleeves.
Obama has worn the Venezuelan-born designer before, including last June at a dinner honoring her husband in Berlin.
The first lady joined President Barack Obama, clad in a traditional black tuxedo, in welcoming Hollande and about 350 other power players—including some familiar Hollywood faces—to their humble home-office.
Bradley Cooper, J.J. Abrams, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mindy Kaling, Mary J. Blige and Stephen Colbert all made the guest list.
In fact, Cooper was seen chatting up Secretary of State John Kerry,Veep star Louis-Dreyfus was seated next to real-life Vice President Joe Biden, and Colbert scored a plum seat next to Michelle Obama at the head table.
Oh, to be a fly on a water glass at that table. (But surely Colbert will do a little bragging about in on the Report.)
Yesterday, the first lady shared a pic of pups Bo and Sunny keeping the seats warm at another immaculately set table, as the Obamas geared up for their French guest of honor.
"Bone appétit!' FLOTUS quipped.
The festivities tonight, meanwhile, were scheduled to be held on the White House's presumably tented South Lawn.
In-house executive Chef Cris Comerford's menu included a winter garden salad, featuring herbs from Michelle Obama's garden and a vinaigrette using honey from the White House beehive; dry-aged rib eye; and a chocolate-dusted ganache cake, using chocolate from the president's native Hawaii and vanilla ice cream made in nearby Pennsylvania.
Pastry chef Bill Yosses also fashioned 38 red roses and 38 purple fleur-de-lis (official flowers of the U.S. and France) out of sugar for a gleaming edible garnish.
"That's more than 1,800 petals!" he wrote on Instagram.
