    Tom Brokaw Reveals Battle With Cancer, Says He's "Very Optimistic About the Future"

    Tom Brokaw has been diagnosed with cancer.

    The 74-year-old journalist and NBC News Special Correspondent revealed his health troubles in a personal note Tuesday and insists doctors are encouraged with his medical treatment so far.

    "With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come," Brokaw said in a statement released by NBC News. "I remain the luckiest guy I know."

    He also said, "I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter."

    As for the specifics on Brokaw's cancer, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August at the Mayo Clinic (myeloma is a cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow).

    Since his diagnosis, Brokaw has continued to work on NBC News projects and has made appearances on the Today show, Nightly News With Brian Williams and Meet the Press.
