Reps for the musicians confirm to E! News that Jonas has been hired as the musical and creative director of Lovato's Neon Lights tour, which kicks off Feb. 9 in Vancouver. "I'm overseeing video content, wardrobe, lighting and staging," says Jonas, Lovato's close friend and frequent collaborator. "And then I'm extending into the musical side of things, which includes creating the arrangements for the songs. I'm building what Demi wanted, which is a show without stops and starts."
The "Who I Am" singer began working on Lovato's tour several months ago, around the same time the Jonas Brothers officially disbanded. "Demi and I have the same manager," Jonas tells Rolling Stone. "I was immediately excited when I was offered the position. The relationship that Demi and I had over eight years really gives me the insight into how to best communicate with her and her team."
Lovato, 21, actually let the news slip two months ago on the red carpet, telling E! News in December 2013, "Nick is helping me create the show for my tour next year. Today we were talking about designs and music and how we can really make my show incredible and like nothing I've done before."
All four of Lovato's studio albums will be represented on tour. Many songs were co-written with Jonas.
"I've been in rehearsals with the band for the last two weeks," Jonas shares. "The biggest challenge has been just trying to rethink some of the music and see how we could compliment it with lights and video. I sat down with the band and said to them, 'You need to step into this like it's a new gig. None of these arrangements are going to sound like the originals, so you need to have an open mind.'"
Given that he's also in the process of working on his own solo album, Jonas isn't going to be with Lovato every step of the way. "I won't be at every single show," he explains. "I'll get the tour up and running, make sure it's running smoothly, and then check in every few weeks." As for his own music, Jonas says, "Some of it is done and ready to be released. I've got a lot of things in the pipeline right now and I'm waiting to release some news about my music and my next steps. It isn't quite locked in yet, but I have started making some music and now it's all about lining up the pieces."
In related news, Lovato will also stop by E!'s Chelsea Lately on Thursday, Feb. 13.
