Austin Mahone on Selena Gomez Dating Rumor: "She's Awesome," but "That's The Most Random Thing Ever"

"We're just close friends," he told E! News. "She's awesome. Very talented, sweet girl."

Safe to say no one was more surprised than Austin Mahone when he woke up Wednesday morning to discover that he's reportedly "dating" Selena Gomez. 

While several tabloids claimed the young stars were a couple after they were set up by mutual pal and matchmaker Taylor Swift, E! News learned from multiple sources that the two are both single.

And now the 17-year-old "What About Love" singer is setting the record straight himself.

"No definitely not," he told E! News when asked if the famous friends have recently coupled up. "We're just close friends. She's awesome. Very talented, sweet girl."

Clearly, Mahone has nothing but admiration for the brunette beauty, but that doesn't make dealing with the scrutiny surrounding his love life any easier.

"It's pretty crazy," he admitted of the media attention. "Like I just woke up and they're like, 'Oh yeah by the way they say you're dating Selena Gomez..' Like what?! That's the most random thing ever."

However, it's not entirely random, considering this isn't the first time the pair have sparked romantic rumors in the past. They were spotted together at Disneyland over the summer, but despite the relationship reports, a source told E! News at the time that the duo is "really good friends and has a lot of fun together."

Gomez has been spotted out and about spending quality time with her girlfriends since the arrest of her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The 21-year-old brunette beauty grabbed dinner with her bestie Demi Lovato at Craig's in West Hollywood less than 24 hours after the Biebs' Miami bust. Lovato later told Ryan Seacrest that her BFF is "strong and doing really well right now," adding that the pair have "an incredible friendship" and she "loves her very much."

In addition to her dinner date with Demi, Selena also recently attended a pre-Grammy party with her Spring Breakers costar Ashley Benson where she looked gorgeous in a black ensemble, a Doloris Petunia headpiece, a bindi and bright red lips, appearing in "great spirits" as she smiled and posed for pics.
