Whether it's an off-hand look given by a member of the audience, an impromptu dance party, a killer performance or, tonight anyway, a comically humongous hat that prompted Arby's to ask for its signature topper back, the 'sphere is never without multiple topics to chatter about.
The 56th Annual Grammy Awards was no exception—and the three-and-a-half-hour-plus (It was -plus, right? Certainly seemed like a -plus, anyway) show was a veritable free-for-all of rewind-worthy stuff, including these five jaw-dropping moments...
1. Beyoncé and Jay Z Stop the Show, 20 Seconds In: Tonight's biggest show-stopper, and easily the most intoxicating moment of the evening for everyone who witnessed it, occurred within the first few minutes when the couple opened the Grammys with "Drunk in Love." Our thoughts on the performance can be summed up in just a few words: Jay Z intimately yet not raunchily brushing his hands across the top of his wife's butt. That is all.
2. More Than Luck for Daft Punk: The helmet-sporting French duo's Random Access Memories became the first dance-music LP to win Album of the Year since the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever. Not only did more Daft Punk mean more time spent with Pharrell's hat, but their live performance of their mega-hit "Get Lucky," which was also named Record of the Year (one of Daft Punk's leading five Grammy wins), had the entire audience (and not just the always bouncy Taylor Swift) clapping and dancing in the most heartwarming display of the night. Until, that is...
3. Nearly Three Dozen Couples Got Married!: During Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' performance of "Same Love" with Mary Lambert, the dulcet voice now familiar from that hit record, and special guest Madonna, who offered up some of her own "Open Your Heart," 33 couples (some same-sex, some heterosexual) tied the knot on live TV. Queen Latifah officiated the I-dos, Keith Urban teared up and all was magic. (FYI, it was originally reported that 34 duos would swap vows, but Latifah announced the presence of 33 on the air.)
4. Speaking of Rap's Biggest Deals...: By the way, not only were Macklemore & Ryan Lewis named Best New Artist, but they also won Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album over the likes of Kanye West, Jay Z, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The duo are an incredibly likable pair and they hit the big-time with a positive message in tow, but was The Heist better than Yeezus? Better than Nothing Was the Same? Better than Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City?!
5. So Taylor Had a Weird Night...: It's not Taylor Swift's fault that the world scrutinizes her every reaction to everything. But while her loss for Best Country Album (her biggest hope for a win tonight, despite Red not sounding particularly country) to Kacey Musgraves passed by without any big to-do, the "r" sound in Random Access Memories had her thinking—just for a second!—that it was Red that had been named Album of the Year. Blink and you missed it! But surely we spent way much more time feeling sorry for Taylor, who finished the night 0-for-4, than she herself did. Taylor probably spent the rest of the night dancing up a storm with her pals and taking cute pics with handsome types, none the worse for GIF wear.
