(500) Days Director Webb Stuck to New Spider-Man; Joseph Gordon-Levitt Next?

Marc Webb just directed Joseph Gordon-Levitt in his most appealing role yet. Could his most heroic role be next?

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have tapped the (500) Days of Summer auteur to helm what they're hoping will be the first installment of a retooled Spider-Man franchise, which will pick up in 2012 with Peter Parker back in high school.

Which will be different from when Tobey Maguire's Peter was in high school in 2002's Spider-Man because...there will be more arachnid angst?

Anyway, Sony Pictures CEO Amy Pascal says that they picked Webb because of his past success with shepherding actors' emotions onto the big screen.

"We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter's shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man's adventure," Pascal said in a statement Tuesday. "We believe Marc Webb is the perfect choice to bring us on that journey."

And since it was Gordon-Levitt's emotion and anxiety that Webb brought to the forefront so well in (500) Days, could the boyish-looking 28-year-old, who honed some blockbuster chops in last summer's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, be persuaded to suit up as the thinking man's Spidey?

"I'm honored and flattered that you would ask me that," Gordon-Levitt told MTV News when asked on the Golden Globes red carpet if a deal was in the works.

The new Spider-Man is so far off in the future, there's nothing to take photos of yet. But we have pics from these Movies From the Future!
