Jordan Strauss/Invision/APFans of The Butler may be infuriated at the fact that Oprah Winfrey was snubbed by the Academy, but the superstar isn't upset at all.
The 2014 Oscar nominations were revealed yesterday, and the TV mogul was overlooked in the Best Supporting Actress category in favor of Blue Jasmine's Sally Hawkins, American Hustle's Jennifer Lawrence, 12 Years a Slave's Lupita Nyong'o, August: Osage County's Julia Roberts and Nebraska's June Squibb.
So when asked by reporters at the 2014 Critics' Choice Movie Awards last night whether she felt disappointed about not being considered, Winfrey explained that she never even expected to be in the running.
"Look at that category, and look who's nominated in that category. My friend Julia, and June, who I don't know, but Sally Hawkins, and Jennifer and Lupita. I think that's fantastic. I haven't picked up the acting chops in 15 years, so to be able to be a part of a film that could get that kind of attention, that could earn that kind of audience respect that it has…I've been saying all along, 'I already won,' " she began to say.
"If anybody sees or reads anything that says I was the slightest bit upset…I had no expectation for a nomination. I really didn't. I think I was the only person who didn't in my group. And I just feel like, wow. What an amazing thing I got to do that. I really do."
She was a little puzzled, however, to see that the film didn't make it on the Best Picture ballot. "Gayle [King] brought to my attention that there was an extra spot for the Best Picture. So I don't know what happened there."
The conversation then took an interesting turn and Oprah revealed that she's quite handy when it comes to fixing things around the house, especially a porcelain throne. Winfrey confirmed that she fixed a toilet all by herself, by first explaining to reporters what has to be done.
"When you go to flush it and it didn't, there's a little chain that connects to the little line thing that's gonna connect to the bubble. When the little chain falls down and it drops, then you cannot flush. But if you pick that chain up and you put it in the right little spot, then it flushes," she said.
"So I figured that out because Stedman [Graham]'s toilet was running and I wanted to fix his without calling a plumber. So what I did, I went around and took the tops off of all the other toilets, to see what that was doing, and then I figured out what was missing. It was the chain."
