Paramount Pictures/Sony Pictures/Fox Searchlight Good news for whichever film walks away with the Producers Guild of America crown: Oscar may be next.
The influential group named its nominees for the 25th Annual PGA Awards, taking place Jan. 19 at the Beverly Hilton—and while none of the 10 films that made the cut in and of themselves are a major surprise, the list of snubs is notable.
First, however, the expected: American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave, which are tied for most Golden Globe nominations this year with seven apiece, are both up for what is formally called the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
Gravity, a huge critical and box office hit, is also in the running, as is Woody Allen's well-acted latest, Blue Jasmine, and the at-times intense yet family-friendly Saving Mr. Banks.
While some critics groups have tended to opt for one or the other, the PGA made it a Tom Hanks two-fer, also selecting the harrowing hijacked-at-sea drama Captain Phillips.
The black and white dramedy Nebraska, the man-loves-machine romance Her and the one-two Matthew McConaughey-Jared Leto punch of Dallas Buyers Club are in the mix—and rounding out the list of nominees is The Wolf of Wall Street, Martin Scorsese's critically lauded but polarizing based-on-a-true-story drama about a crooked stockbroker's debauched days of excess before his inevitable fall.
Not nominated, meanwhile, are the Coen brothers' latest, Inside Llewyn Davis; the star-packed Lee Daniels' The Butler, and the similarly star-packed August: Osage County (which actually was panned when it finally hit theaters).
The winner of the PGA's top honor has gone on to score the Oscar for Best Picture for the last six years.
The PGA will also be honoring long-form television (miniseries/TV movies) and those nominees are: American Horror Story: Asylum, Behind the Candelabra, Killing Kennedy, Phil Spector and Top of the Lake.
