Just how memorable was this year in movies? Consider this: Leonardo DiCaprio was brash, charming and unpredictable in not one, but two films this year as Jay Gatsby and Jordan Belfort. Same goes for Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips and Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks. Blockbusters like The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire delivered superior sequels. Cate Blanchett became the Blanche DuBois of our time in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. Disney released their best animated film since Beauty and the Beast. And creepy doll Annabelle Higgins got out of her case in the biggest horror film of the in recent memory.

Short term 12

Yet, none of those films cracked our top ten.

This year, every type of genre was bursting with new life. From the authentic gems like Short Term 12 to Sarah Polley's documentary Stories We Tell. Of course, many came faster & more furious, sometimes, defying Gravity all together.

Check out our picks for the 10 best movies of the year.
