Bye, bye, Mrs. American Pie.
Longtime celebrity couple Katie Holmes and Chris Klein have called off their engagement and gone their separate ways, a rep for Holmes confirmed.
"They broke off the engagement but are remaining good friends," the rep said. "But they are no longer dating."
The Dawson's Creek alum and the American Pie star have been linked since 2000--an eternity in Tinseltown terms.
They announced their plans to wed in December 2003.
Holmes, 26, best known for playing the angst-ridden Joey Potter on Creek, most recently appeared on the big screen in 2004's First Daughter as a reluctant presidential offspring who wants no part of the Secret Service detail assigned to follow her.
Next up, she'll appear in Batman Begins, a prequel to the other Batman movies that explains how Bruce Wayne came to realize his destiny as a winged superhero with a hell of a cool car. The movie, starring Christian Bale in the title role, is due to open June 17.
Holmes is also at work on Thank You for Smoking, a satirical comedy centering on a Big Tobacco spokesman who must pitch cigarettes in a positive light while simultaneously trying to serve as a role model for his young son. Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello and Adam Brody also star.
Up ahead, Holmes is set to star opposite Dennis Quaid in the dark drama Shame on You, about real-life King of Western Swing Spade Cooley, a '40s-era fiddle player who was sentenced to life in prison in 1961 after he beat and kicked his estranged wife to death before the eyes of their teenage daughter.
Klein, 25, was most recently seen in 2004's The United States of Leland opposite Don Cheadle and Ryan Gosling.
He'll next be seen in upcoming comedy The Long Weekend, about a pair of brothers--one an uptight careerman (Brendan Fehr), one a wild playboy (Klein)--who have different ideas about the right way to spend their weekend.
Up ahead, Klein will appear in Just Friends, also featuring Alanis Morissette.
