NBC announced Tuesday that they are officially moving forward with the sequel to History's smash miniseries The Bible. The Peacock network revealed a few months ago that they were looking to produce a follow-up to Mark Burnett's miraculous hit and now the 12-episode miniseries A.D. will be headed to a small screen near you.
President of NBC Entertainment Jennifer Salke explained in July that the sequel will begin in the days after Jesus' death and it will follow the "perfect storm" that is "fueled by social injustice, Roman military oppression and religious unrest" in the Holy Land.
Burnett, his wife, Roma Downey, and Richard Bedser will serve as executive producers on the project, however it's looking like A.D. will not premiere until spring 2015.
"You might think the story is over at the Crucifixion, but as most of the world knows, that was only the beginning," Salke said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "Everyone's lives were completely altered in an instant and the immediate aftermath of Christ's death had an impact on his disciples, his mother Mary and key political and religious leaders of the time."
"In the first episode alone," she continued, "you see the last moments of the Crucifixion, Judas taking his own life after betraying Christ, Peter denying Jesus three times and then the miracle of the Resurrection."
The Bible premiered in March to more than 13 million viewers and became the top-selling miniseries of all time and the No. 1 television series on DVD and Blu-ray in the past five years.
