"And now it's time for one last bow / Like all your other selves / Eleven's hour is over now / The clock is striking twelve."
Better get out your best mourning bow ties, Who fans, because it's almost time to say goodbye to everybody's favorite time-traveling man-child. Matt Smith's reign as Doctor ends this Christmas, and we've got the trailer to help prepare your tear ducts for what is sure to be an sob-inducing sendoff.
According to an official synopsis on the BBC website, "The massed forces of the universe's deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them, the Doctor. Rescuing Clara (Jenna Louise Coleman) from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe."
The 30-second trailer, which was released today, manages to pack a in a lot of excitement and a few of the show's most famous villains—Cybermen, the Silence, the Weeping Angels, and a Dalek that declares "The Doctor is regenerating!"
Smith, who has played the Doctor for three seasons since 2010, announced his departure from the long-running BBC series earlier this year, much to the dismay of many fans. But they can take solace in knowing they can catch him on the big screen (albeit without his standard floppy hair) in 2014 in Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster.
There's no doubt this will be an emotional farewell to Matt Smith, but we're also excited to see him pass the reigns to the new, older, and probably a bit wiser Doctor, Peter Capaldi, who will take over the role full-time beginning fall 2014, with at least 13 episodes to air before the end of the year.
Watch the trailer for the Christmas special below, and then head to the comments if you feel like reminiscing about your favorite Matt Smith episodes. We're tempted to go with "Vincent and the Doctor," though it's kind of hard to choose.
The Doctor Who Christmas Special airs December 25 at 9 p.m. on BBC America.
