Stephen Colbert is opening up about his exciting cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

During his appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, the 49-year-old funnyman talked about his secret appearance in the upcoming flick.

"I'm kind of the breakout star of The Hobbit, Dave," Colbert joked. "I don't want to tell anybody where I am, but I am in it. I'm in this next one coming up."

He continued, "I and my wife and my two boys were invited down to New Zealand to play around with the folks in The Hobbit by [director] Peter Jackson. We went down there. We're in a scene in Lake-town. I don't want to say where. It's kind of a Where's Waldo."

"I was hoping I was going to be an elf," Colbert quipped, adding, "because I already have one pointed ear."

Hobbit screenwriter Philippa Boyens recently gave some clues as to where you'll find Colbert in the new flick. "As Stephen Colbert would, he works for the Master of Lake-town, he works for the politician," she told Vulture. "He's one of his spies. So if you keep an eye out for the guy who has a fake eye patch."
