Although the Bangerz singer can do things to raise some eyebrows, Lovato continues to defend Miley's antics, but the blue-haired star does express some worry for her childhood pal.
"I think she knows what she's doing. A lot of artists take that route of shock value and that's totally fine and that's great, but I think that she has such an incredible voice that's overshadowed by some of the things that she's doing," Demi told Katie Couric on her talk show (airing tomorrow).
"You know it's her journey, she's having fun, she's being who she is and will always love her. She's been one of my friends since I was 14, but everyone's on their different journey's right now and she's doing that and having fun, so power to her!"
As a former Disney star herself, Demi can feel for Miley in her attempt to transition from a child star to the celeb she is today. And although they each took different routes to adulthood, Lovato understands what it's like to grow up in front of America's eyes.
"I think that the world kind of needs to get over the fact that she was Hannah Montana when she was like 16 or whatever…Same thing with me, but I guess my transition was a little different because I went straight to rehab, but—I didn't twerk, I just went to rehab," she quipped.
"It's something that is just—nobody knows her, and nobody knows who I am, and same with Selena Gomez and Jonas Brothers and everybody that's grown up in front of the public eye. We're adults now…I'm 21 and I'm nowhere near the same person that I was when I was 15…so go a little easy on us America."
This isn't the first time Lovato's come to Cyrus' defense.
During a recent interview with Fox 31's Everyday, Lovato was asked to share her thoughts on the "Wrecking Ball" singer's controversial new image, and 21-year-old songbird was quick to show her support for Cyrus while applauding Miley for staying true to herself.
"I've said this a million times, I know Britney [Spears] and Miley very well. Miley has been one of my best friends growing up and so I'm happy for her," the newly blue haired beauty said. "She's doing what she wants to do and this is her time to break out and figure out, you know, what she wants to do in her career and her image and everything."
