X-Men: Days of Future Past Trailer Is Here—In the Present!

Call it Back to the Future—the mutant edition.

The first official trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past has been unleashed online and fanboys will be thrilled to see the dream cast combines the star-studded ensemble from the original X-Men trilogy with that of 2011's prequel, X-Men: First Class.

And by the looks of the teaser, they're in for quite a time travel epic as the older version of Charles Xavier, aka Professor X (Patrick Stewart) miraculously returns from the dead after being vaporized by Jean Grey (hints of his resurrection occur in the post-credit sequence for X-Men: The Last Stand).

Faced with the mutants' impending doom in the present-day, Xavier joins forces again with his old frenemy, Magneto (Ian McKellen) and the two engage Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to travel back in time and meet their younger selves (i.e. the ensemble that appeared in First Class) whereupon he'll get their help in order to change the past and save the mutant species in the future.

Logan's decision to accept this quest sets off a chain reaction of events that finds space and time in the Marvel universe turned upside down in ways that will no doubt provide plentiful entertainment for anyone who's ever dissected Back to the Future's complex timelines.  And considering Wolverine's immortal, the movie's hook makes perfect sense.

"So, I wake up in my younger body and then what?" Logan asks.

"Find me and convince me of all this," replies Professor X.

"And where do I find you?" wonders our adamantium-infused hero to Magneto.

"A different path. A darker path," responds the latter.

And so returning to what appears to be the mid-'60s after the events of First Class which intersected the Cuban Missile Crisis, Logan finds the younger X (James McAvoy) who tells him in not so subtle terms, "I don't want your suffering, I don't want your future!"

Besides Wolverine, many of your other favorite X-Men regulars are back, among them Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Storm (Halle Berry), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Rogue (Anna Paquin), and Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page). They're joined by Peter Dinklage, a military scientist who creates robots called Sentinels tasked with hunting down and killing the mutants.

The trailer also has its fair share of intense action scenes including a shirtless Wolfie kicking butt, a young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) doing his hovering thing, Mystique turning more and more to the dark side and Storm channeling lightning (no word whether that's 1.21 Gigawatts!).

X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters on May 23, 2014.
