So far in our week of TV-inspired Halloween Costumes, we've given you solo options, bromance options, and lady-mance (we really need a better word for that, no?) options. But today is a special day because today is a bonus day—Couple costumes AND co-ed BFF costumes!
Whether you want to show off your love or your TV-trope-defiant friendship, here are nine new possibilities for this year's costume contests...
The Characters: Dwight Schrute and Angela Martin from The Office
How to Be Angela: Angela is all about the conservative cat lady style: Cute cat sweater, A-line skirt, tights, some practical Mary Janes. Optional: A cat mug, or an actual cat.|
How to Be Dwight: Just watch this instructional video, courtesy of Jim Halpert, in which dressing up as Dwight will only cost you a grand total of $11. And remember: Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
The Characters: Kurt and Blaine from Glee
How to Be Kurt: Kurt's a former Vogue.com intern, so we're talking high fashion, people–fitted, printed jeans, some sort of highly creative vest over a bright button down, and some cool boots. Arrange your hair into a perfect swirl on top of your head.
How to Be Blaine: It's all about the bow-ties and the hair gel! Find some bright, fitted pants, a belt, a fitted polo (tucked in), and a bow-tie that matches your pants. Then, take an entire container of hair gel and pour it onto your head, smoothing down your hair until it's hard as concrete. Finally, slip on some cool shoes (no socks) and you're ready to skip down the halls while leading a rousing Black Keys / Lady Gaga mashup.
The Characters: Charming and Snow from Once Upon a Time
How to Be Enchanted Forest Charming: First of all, you'll need a majestic sword. You will also need a magnificent military-esque medieval-looking jacket, some marvelously tight pants, and some knee-high boots. Some decorated leather gloves and a handy, sword-holding belt are also necessary.
How to Be Enchanted Forest Snow (the wild, fur-wearing version): Don't brush your hair for three days before, but tie some of it back in a Princess-y kind of way. Find some pants that look like you stitched them together yourself, and a slightly frilly, long-sleeved white shirt. You'll need a long, leather vest that also looks like you made it yourself, and a fur collar. Rub some dirt on your face, and put on some knee-high leather boots. Be both adorable and badass at the same time.
The Characters: April and Andy aka Janet Snakehole and Bert Macklin from Parks and Recreation
How to Be Janet Snakehole: In order to portray the criminal mastermind that is (April Ludgate's alter-ego) Janet Snakehole, you'll need the finest clothes from Bergdorf Goodman, you see. However, you could also get away with just a fancy black coat; a tiny, sparkly black hat; old timey cigarette; pearl necklace and a bracelet. Optional: a bag full of the president's rubies, which you stole.
How to Be Bert Macklin: Put on a dress shirt, a tie, some dress pants, and an FBI jacket, slick back your hair, hold your hand to your ear and talk into your wrist, and you can tell everyone to call you Eagle 1.
The Characters: Alex and Piper from Orange is the New Black
How to Be Alex: You'll need a long-sleeved white shirt and a tan prison uniform (you could probably get away with tan scrubs), an ID badge, dark-rimmed glasses, black work boots, and long black hair. You could also draw a tattoo on your right wrist, a la this picture.
How to Be Piper: If you're newbie Piper, a white t-shirt, a bright orange prison uniform, a blonde wig, black work boots, and an ID badge. If you're non-newbie piper, go for a long-sleeved grey shirt and a tan prison uniform.
Guy and Girl BFF suggestions
The Characters: Carrie Mathison and Saul Bernenson from Homeland
How to be Office Carrie: Pantsuit, blouse, FBI badge pinned to the lapel, and Carrie's signature crying face. (See: Anne Hathaway's perfect impression in this video.) Optional: Cork board covered in scribbles, post-its, and barely classified CIA documents.
How to be Undercover Carrie: Comfortable but stylish clothes (think loose cargo pants and a flowy shirt), patterned scarf wrapped around your head to almost cover your hair, a stylish but practical crossbody bag.
How to be Saul: Most important: A magnificent beard that shelters the entire lower part of your face. Big glasses. A button down and a nice sports coat. Disapproval mixed with worry in every line of your face. The comforting voice of Mandy Patinkin.
The Characters: Norma and Norman Bates from Bates Motel
How to Be Norma: Go for the comfortable but stylish mom look–floral skirt, plain button down tucked in, with a sweater.
How to Be Norman: Norman's got kind of a creepy vintage hipster thing going on. Get some straight black or dark green jeans, a button down, with a dark-colored vintage-y sweater over it. Comb your hair down til it's good and square. What's really going to sell this costume is the relationship – never leave Norma's side. If you guys can coordinate colors, that will help too.
The Characters: Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson from Elementary
How to Be Out on the Town Sherlock: Collared shirt, vest, red plaid scarf, black jacket, British accent.
How to Be Chilling in the Brownstone Sherlock: brown pants, no shirt, tattoos.
How to Be Joan: Think Olivia Pope, but a little less expensive and a little bit cooler. Lots of comfy and big sweaters in white or grey, but pair it with a cool skirt in a muted tone, and tights. Definitely opt for some heeled boots or pumps that are completely impractical for solving mysteries in New York.
