While presenting Leto with the Hollywood Breakout Performance Award during last night Hollywood Film Awards in Beverly Hilton hotel, pal Robert Downey Jr. poked fun at Leto's latest role as a cross-dressing HIV patient alongside Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club.
"Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, Faye Dunaway, Charlize Theron, Jared Leto," Downey Jr. began his speech, adding, "All arguably the most beautiful actresses of their generation."
After pausing for the audience to erupt with laughter, the Iron Man actor continued with a more serious tone. "For over 20 years, Mr. Leto has managed to defy the expectations of the industry, his peers and his audience," he said. "Dallas Buyers Club is an extraordinary film and the entire cast does a stellar job, but my friend has demonstrated in his portrayal of Rayon a depth and complexity, a humanity and wit rarely seen. This tragic and fully realized picture of a man who is a woman fighting to survive the system's judgment."
During his acceptance speech, Leto cracked, "It's crazy what happens when people find out that you look great in a skirt. You get invited to all the cool parties."
"One of the many things that I had to do for this transformative role was to wax my entire body, but thankfully it was a period piece so I didn't have to do the full Brazilian," he joked. "You know what I'm talking about."
