For X-Files fans, a trilogy is out there—all they need is a green light.

Appearing Saturday at a Paley Center for Media event in New York City to mark the sci-fi horror drama's 20th anniversary, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson told attendees they hope to reprise their roles as Mulder and Scully in a third X-Files movie.

"All the principals are on board," Duchovny said, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times. "Gillian and I want to do it, so it's really up to 20th Century Fox at this point."

X-Files mastermind Chris Carter is also down for a third go-round, according to the 53-year-old actor, despite past legal issues with the studio which delayed 2008's sequel, The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

"If it takes fan encouragement to get Fox interested in that, then I guess that's what it would be," the 45-year-old thesp said.

For the uninitiated, The X-Files followed the adventures of FBI Special Agents Fox "Spooky" Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigated all kinds of unsolved cases involving alien abductions, paranormal phenomena and various mutants and other fiends of the night.

The first big-screen installment focused on the series' central storyline of a possible E.T. colonization of earth. No word yet whether any new film would return to that popular "mytharc," though Carter has indicated in previous media interviews that that would be the case.

Here's believing another flick will happen.
