The Fosters has officially been renewed for a second season, the network announced on Friday. The series, which is executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, is set to return for the second half of its freshman season in January.

The family drama ranked as TV's No. 1 new cable series of the summer in viewers 12-34, with the August season finale setting series' high records in total viewers and several target demos. In fact, it's the network's second-best performer, just behind Pretty Little Liars, when it comes to their target demos.

"The Fosters has demonstrated its ability to build an audience, and the creative team's compelling storytelling assures us that there will be more growth in upcoming seasons," Kate Juergens, chief creative officer and executive vice president, programming, said in a statement. "The show's dynamic cast and groundbreaking storylines resonate with our core viewers and leave them wanting more."

The series centers on Lena (Sherri Saum) and Stef (Teri Polo), a couple raising a mix of foster and biological kids. In the season finale, the pair tied the knot. Of the landmark ceremony, creator Bradley Bredeweg said, "What was just amazing serendipity is the Supreme Court ruled the same month we went on the air and the day we were shooting the wedding was the same day that the Prop 8 planners were getting married."

Jake T. Austin, Maia Mitchell, David Lambert, Hayden Byerly, Danny Nucci and Cierra Ramirez also star in the series.

The Fosters returns in January 2014 to ABC Family.
