It's been a year since Redmond O'Neal was released from jail and he is looking happier than ever.

O'Neal made a rare red carpet appearance on Saturday with his father Ryan O'Neal (mom is the late Farrah Fawcett) at the third annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Redmond, 28, has cleaned up nicely. On Saturday, he wore a black tuxedo, white shirt and a striped black tie. His red hair was short and slicked back and he had some chin stubble. The once rail-thin Redmond also appears much healthier after putting on some weight.

He and his dad smiled and laughed together as they walked the carpet arm in arm.

Redmond was released on Oct. 9, 2012 after the judge in his case suspended his sentence after his successful completion of a one-year in-patient treatment program.

In August 2011, Redmond was charged with felony possession of heroin and possession with a handgun, after being stopped by Santa Monica police at a traffic stop. He subsequently pleaded no contest to the charges and was facing up to three years and eight months in prison.
