If you thought Demi Lovato's new blue'‘do was inspired by the Smurfs, you'd be wrong.

According to the star's colorist Amber Maynard from Nine Zero One Salon, the singer—like most gals—gets her beauty ideas from one very popular picture website. "Demi looked up blue hair on Pinterest and showed me a couple of photos she liked," Amber shared exclusively with E! News.

Despite the star's casual approach, her shade swap was months in the making.

"We've been planning it ever since she has been going blond. We started taking her lighter at the beginning of the year," says Amber. And while blue was her final choice she did consider other colors. "She was thinking of going pink or purple, but she kept going back to blue."

Achieving Demi's ideal blue took more than one dye. "I used four different blues and greens," explains Amber. "My favorite secret is to use Unite Blonda Shampoo to prep the hair. That sets a violet blue undertone. When I'm mixing in the color, I put conditioner in the color."

The entire process took around five hours and the duo finished around 3 a.m. Luckily for the star—who had an early morning the following day—it was done in her own living room.

This isn't the first time the singer has tried the azure tint. Last summer she rocked indigo ends which created an ombré effect. She even modeled the look on the November 2012 cover of Teen Vogue.
