In case you missed it: Kerry Washington topped our favorite beauty looks from last night.

The Scandal star's romantic makeup was easily one of her best makeup looks all year—and that's saying something considering she rarely gets it wrong on the red carpet!

So we chatted Carola Gonzalez, the makeup artist who was behind the star's stunning look to find out exactly how to copy her glow.

"The inspiration came from the delicate dress," Gonzalez, tells E! News in reference to Washington's Marchesa gown with ribbon details and floral embroideries. "It was soft, sweet and almost princess-like, and we wanted to echo those qualities with something quite dreamy."

Although quite a few stars opted for a power pout, Carola decided not to go in that direction at the last minute.

"Originally I had thought about creating a bold lip statement but, after seeing the dress in person, it would not have hit the right note," Gonzalez shares. "Instead, we highlighted the eyes with soft plum shadows (Hourglass' Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Exhibition) and used a rosy beige gloss (Hourglass's Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Truth) on the lips. The skin was a velvety matte, created using Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation, which I didn't even need to powder."

But the real trick came from the highlighter. "For the cheeks, I combined Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Radiant Light with a sparkling rose blush. I applied Radiant Light, a sun-kissed golden beige powder, to the cheekbones, forehead, nose and chin. The rose blush was applied on the apples of the cheeks and up towards the temples. The combination of the two cheek shades created an exquisite radiance."
