Long before Miley Cyrus twerked up a storm at the MTV Video Music Awards, there was another pop princess whose performances caused controversy at the annual show: Britney Spears. During a Sept. 17 Good Morning America interview, Spears—who also confirmed her Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood—defended the "We Can't Stop" singer's racy new image.

"I think anytime you do a performance that is that memorable, you're going to have criticism," she explained. "I think she's doing her thing. She's being herself, so I give props to her."

Spears, 31, recently recorded a duet with Cyrus, "SMS (Bangerz)." The track will appear on Cyrus' forthcoming album, Bangerz.

Earlier this summer, Cyrus, 20, said she bonded with the "Work Bitch" singer due to their similar public personas. "Everyone goes through a time in their life where they don't want their picture taken every day," Cyrus told The Huffington Post U.K. of Spears. "She just never had that time where she could say, 'I'm going through something right now and need to shut down.' I also don't have that, so it's good to have that one person in my life who gets it."
