It seems that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth parted ways weeks before they went public with their split.

A source close to the couple tells E! News exclusively that Liam had begun the process of moving things out of Miley's Los Angeles home around the time of her MTV VMA performance on Aug. 25.

The source added that their engagement "has been off ever since."

The "Wrecking Ball" singer's rep confirmed to E! News Monday that the two had ended their almost four-year relationship.

And while the timing of the breakup does seem suspect, sources are quick to confirm that the performance was absolutely not the cause of the couple calling it quits.

Sources say that it was "Miley's decision, after coming to grips with Liam being what she believed was less than faithful to her."

Just last week, rumors swirled that Hemsworth had been going behind Cyrus' back and sexting Mad Men star January Jones. And while his rep vehemently denied the reports calling them, "tabloid fiction," a source tells E! News that there is some truth to the reports of Hemsworth having a relationship with Jones.

Cyrus hinted at the breakup news over the weekend when she unfollowed her former fiancé on Twitter.

Despite the end of her engagement, the former Disney darling has been "doing good," and focusing on her career milestones lately (including breaking records on Vevo).

Cyrus is also gearing up to launch her album in coming weeks—something that has been taking up most of her time and attention.

The two first began dating in 2009 when they costarred in The Last Song. Hemsworth and Cyrus briefly called it quits in August 2010 before getting back together.
