Box Office: Insidious: Chapter 2 Debuts at No. 1, Tops The Family

The horror-thriller starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne takes first place over Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer's action comedy

It might have had something to do with Friday the 13th, but moviegoers were in the mood for horror this weekend.

Insidious: Chapter 2, director James Wan's follow up to his 2011 supernatural horror hit starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, took the top spot at this weekend's box office, landing at No. 1 with $41 million.

Meanwhile, the off-beat action comedy The Family, starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, came in a distant No. 2 in its opening weekend with $14.5 million. Rounding out the top 3 was the No. 1 movie last week, the science-fiction thriller Riddick, earning $7 million.

And Lee Daniels' drama The Butler continued to fare well with moviegoers, earning $5.5 million and landing at number 4.
