The Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that an investigation is underway involving a months-old extortion case surrounding Miss Teen USA, Cassidy Wolf.
A spokeswoman for the FBI's Los Angeles Office told the Los Angeles Times that she was aware of an FBI investigation into a ‘sextortion' case, but was not able to further discuss details of the case.
A bit of background: the term sextortion means when someone is blackmailed with the treat to release sexual images or information if the targeted victim does not comply.
Four months ago, the 19-year-old beauty queen claimed that she being targeted by a hacker who claimed to have stolen nude photos of her from her web cam and computer.
Wolfe, who just won the title of Miss Teen USA over the weekend at the Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas, has made numerous remarks in interviews saying that she received an anonymous email from someone threatening to release nude photos of her that they had in their possession.
She also has said that the anonymous writer of the emails had tried to extort her for money in an effort to ensure that the snapshots were not made public.
It appears that the teenager is just the latest in an alarming trend of hacked images being released.
Some of Hollywood's leading ladies, like Scarlett Johansson, Christina Aguilera and Mila Kunis, have also been victims of similar methods of hacking.
In fact, just last year, Christopher Chaney was sentenced to 10 years in prison for hacking into email accounts and illegally obtaining nude images of the stars from 2010 to 2011.
Chaney has since publicly apologized for his actions.
