On Wednesday, the American Idol runner-up shocked fans with an essay in which he wrote, "I have spent days skipping meals in order to make sure I have enough. To make sure my children, and my wife have enough."
Needless to say, the 34-year-old singer's saddening admission caused a frenzy of media attention. However, Guarini clarified his troubling statement, and even called out one particular outlet, by tweeting yesterday, "Obviously you completely missed the point of my letter @peoplemag. News isn't news anymore, and I'm nowhere near poverty. #twistedmytruth."
It's easy to see how some media outlets might have misinterpreted the message of Guarini's essay. In addition to his "skipping meals" comments, he also wrote, "I'm unafraid to say that I am terrified. I am struggling to make each day meet the next without breaking down and curling up. Sometimes I envy people who sit at a desk all day (at least you know where your next meal is coming from). I'll smile, and laugh,and joke, and entertain...because sometimes it's the only way to keep the ghosts of regret and loss at bay. I am unafraid to be afraid, and in that fear I gather strength."
"I drive a family oriented import, that is over mileage. My clothes are a mixture of gift-suite holdovers, things I bought when I had money but no style, and H&M," he adds.
In a lighter admission, Guarini wrote, "I have a wife whom I love and who loves me (me!) and who lifts me up. Children who give me cherubic-lipped kisses before I leave for work and who are the most delicious morsels of joy and peace and prosperity."
Guarini, who's married to Reina Capodici, welcomed a son named Asher back in February of this year. He also has son William Neko and stepdaughter Lola (from Capodici's first marriage).
