Ladies, go ahead and swoon (or swine) because the Canadian actor (and now director) has just partnered up with the Farm Sanctuary and Humane Society International/Canada to help more than one million breeding pigs on Canadian farms.
What is this Hollywood hunk calling for? The elimination of gestation crates—metal cages that hold breeding pigs so tightly that they can't even turn around—in the Code of Practice for the care and handling of pigs.
"I applaud NFACC for working to improve life for Canada's pigs," Gosling wrote it a Globe and Mail opinion piece, "and hope it will close this dangerous loophole by disallowing the pork industry from confining pigs for weeks at a time–something that I would never dream of doing to [my dog] George, and that no compassionate Canadian would ever do to any animal."
This isn't the first time Gosling has stood up for animal rights. Just last April, the he teamed up with PETA to fight cruelty to cows on dairy farms, specifically a painful process called "dehorning" in which calves have their horns gouged or burned out of their heads.
"There is absolutely no reason—and no excuse—for the cruel, unnecessary practice of dehorning to continue." Gosling wrote in the letter, which was obtained by E! News. "I respectfully urge the National Milk Producers Federation to take the lead in stopping this barbaric practice by requiring farmers to phase out dehorning by breeding for polled, or naturally hornless, cattle.
We're glad that the 32-year-old can fit in the animal lover occupation amongst his many other titles of his busy career.
He's currently working on his newest project and directorial debut How to Catch a Monster, which is set to be released in 2014. The movie stars Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, who had nothing but positive things to say about the new director.
The film also features his The Place Beyond the Pines costar and real-life leading lady woman Eva Mendes. Don't fret now, ladies —There's still a single Ryan Gosling out there!
