From a nasty divorce to charges of public intoxication and DWI to a naked arrest, the embattled country star's life has certainly taken a turn for the worst in recent years.
On Sunday, the Storms of Life singer was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and was subsequently treated for viral cardiomyopathy—a disease that weakens the heart muscle and can lead to heart failure. According to his rep, Kirt Webster, he underwent placement of an Impella peripheral left ventricular assist device for stabilization. He remains in critical condition.
So how did the six-time Grammy winner fall from grace and his country superstar status? Here's a timeline of Travis' turbulent life:
• October 29, 2010: The country star files for divorce after 19 years of marriage to his wife and manager, Elizabeth Travis, citing "irreconcilable differences." His former missus has been credited with jump-starting the Grammy winner's highly successful career after watching him win a talent contest in the mid-1970s at a North Carolina nightclub.
• September 26, 2011: Travis faints in the middle of a song at the Crystal Heart Gala, an annual benefit for the Huguley Memorial Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. "Mr. Travis had been struggling with laryngitis that resulted from chronic allergies and had taken multiple over-the-counter allergy medicines," his doctor told E! News at the time. "During the performance, Mr. Travis was overcome by a combination of dehydration, over-the-counter allergy medications, and caffeine use. This, combined with the heat of the stage lights, caused him to pass out. Mr. Travis was immediately provided medical care and after regaining consciousness, walked off the stage on his own power. He was evaluated by us in his tour bus. Mr. Travis' vital signs were all stable. Mr. Travis went home to recover. Today he is taking our advice and resting." He later resumed his tour as scheduled.
• February 6, 2012: The 52-year-old country star is busted for public intoxication after he was found drinking an open bottle of wine in front of the Sanger Baptist Church in Sanger, Texas. Travis was booked at the Denton County Jail where he received a misdemeanor citation before he was released a few hours later. "I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl," he said in a statement. "I'm committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions." A police video documenting the embarrassing arrest hit the web shortly after.
• April 11, 2012: The Grammy winner's former wife and manager sues the singer for severing their professional relationship, accusing the country crooner of breaching their management contract five months early. In the suit, Travis' manager of 30 years asserted her former husband "had a large truck, an armed guard and several other men" show up at her office and remove "practically all of the property and business records" from her custody. But Travis insisted there was no truth to the allegations. "It is unfortunate that it's come to this," he said in a statement released by his publicist. "We believe the lawsuit lacks merit and that we have legal defenses to her claims."
• May 29, 2012: Travis files a counterclaim to Elizabeth's lawsuit, insisting he owes nothing to Elizabeth Travis Management Inc. because ETMI divulged "personal and confidential information" about the singer that damaged his reputation and harmed his career. He also alleged Elizabeth cheated him by submitting reimbursement requests for first-class travel, expenses which his camp deemed "intentional and reckless."
• August 7, 2012: Less than sixth months after his arrest for public intoxication, the singer was busted in north Texas on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after crashing his car. He was found naked at the scene and arrested for DWI, a misdemeanor, and retaliation, a felony, due to his alleged threats against officers. Luckily, he borrowed some clothes at the big house.
• August 24, 2012: Just two weeks after his arrest for DWI, Travis is issued a citation for simple assault following a fight outside a church in Plano, Texas. According to police, The "Look Heart, No Hands" singer waded into an argument between an estranged husband and wife that turned physical, at which time Travis intervened and alleged assaulted the husband, whose wife was a friend of the Grammy winner. The embattled artist was not taken into custody and appeared to be sober during the brawl. He later pleaded not guilty to the charges.
• January 11, 2013: Travis is formally charged with one count of driving while intoxicated after his infamous naked arrest. He was found to have a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.15 in toxicology tests. After the run-in with the law, Travis' lawyer, Larry Friedman, told E! News the singer was determined to clean up his act. "He has begun a personal revitalization program," Friedman said. "He's on a three-hour-a-day exercise regimen with new diet and exercise. He's completely off of alcohol. He has recorded 31 new songs for an album that will be released in April. And he's paying a lot of attention to his personal matters. We expect 2013 to be an extraordinary year for him. We're also looking at a couple of movie scripts for him as well."
• January 22, 2013: The Grammy winner reaches a plea deal in his misdemeanor assault case stemming from his summertime fight outside a church in Plano, Texas.
• January 31, 2013: Travis pleads guilty to charges of driving while intoxicated stemming from his naked August arrest. He was sentenced to two years' probation, fined $2,000, ordered to spend 30 days at an in-patient treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service. He was also forced to drive with an ignition interlock device as part of his probation.
• July 7, 2013: Travis is hospitalized in critical condition with heart disease. His publicist confirms he suffered from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy—a disease that weakens the heart muscle and can lead to heart failure.
• July 8, 2013: Travis' rep confirms he underwent placement of an Impella peripheral left ventricular assist device for stabilization. He remains in critical condition.
